Ricinoleic acid has documented anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties — this part isn't folklore, it shows up consistently in dermatology research. It also has a thick, occlusive texture that forms a protective layer on skin and hair, which is why it's long been used to lock in moisture and reduce water loss through the scalp and skin barrier.

Where the science gets more careful is hair growth specifically. Some lab research has looked at how ricinoleic acid interacts with compounds involved in the hair growth cycle, and the early findings are interesting — but this is still preliminary, lab-level research, not large clinical trials on real results. We're not going to tell you a few drops will make your beard grow faster. What the evidence does support is simpler and just as useful: a well-moisturized, less inflamed scalp and skin barrier is a healthier foundation for hair and skin to do what they're already doing.

Heat and solvent processing can degrade some of the compounds responsible for these effects. Cold-pressing preserves more of the oil's natural composition — it's not a marketing detail, it's the difference between an oil that's mostly still doing what ricinoleic acid does, and one that's been stripped down along the way.
